Deaf Interpreter Conference I – St. Paul, Minnesota (2015)
The first Deaf Interpreter Conference (DIC I) was held in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2015, marking a historic milestone for the Deaf interpreter community. Organized through the collaboration of Deaf interpreters, educators, and community leaders, the conference created a national platform to recognize and strengthen the professional identity of Deaf interpreters (DIs).
The event focused on education, ethics, mentorship, and collaboration among Deaf and hearing interpreters. Workshops, panel discussions, and networking sessions emphasized the unique linguistic, cultural, and experiential contributions Deaf interpreters bring to the interpreting field.
DIC I set the foundation for future national gatherings and inspired the continued development of Deaf-led training, advocacy, and certification pathways within the interpreting profession.
